SUMMARY:Families Embracing Anti-bias Values - Zoom Screening with Discussion After
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wed. April 23\, 7:00-9:00 PM for a Zoom screening of the film Families Embracing Anti-Bias Values followed by a discussion with Debbie LeeKeenan.  \nThis is a free event (donations will support co-op scholarships). Please use this link to register: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/quTvQLEMTOuR5cirLGhkVg \nFamilies Embracing Anti-Bias Values is a 50-minute documentary about families who intentionally parent with an anti-bias lens\, exploring their hopes\, fears\, strengths\, challenges\, and the pivotal question: What kind of world do we want to create with our children? The film depicts these families in their everyday experiences at home\, in their communities\, and in schools. Each family has their own vision for social justice based on their unique identities\, histories\, experiences and context. They help their children develop positive social identities\, express comfort and joy with human differences\, and form deep\, caring connections. \nDebbie is the Co-Director and Co-Founder of Anti-Bias Leaders ECE and a lecturer\, consultant\, author\, and filmmaker\, currently residing in Seattle\, Washington. Learn more about the film & Debbie LeeKeenan. \nAll sponsorship donations will go directly to support families dealing with financial insecurity so that their children can have excellent early learning experiences for a great start while learning in a supportive community. PAC will also be accepting donations during this lecture. Please consider helping the NSC Cooperative Preschool Program support Seattle families with young children who are struggling to make ends meet. \nThe NSC Parent Education Program’s partnership with Affiliated Cooperative Preschools started over 50 years ago and we offer a warm and gentle introduction to school and community life for young children and their families. Adults and children learn together\, grow  together\, and actively build a community together. PAC is the nonprofit umbrella organization that works with the NSC Parent Education Program to provide parent and early education for families with children from infancy to Pre-K\, with one Kindergarten class as well.

SUMMARY:Lecture: Educating Citizens by Teacher Tom
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for a talk by Teacher Tom.\n\nThe great John Dewey wrote: “Democracy must be born anew with each generation\, and education is its midwife.” The purpose of education in a democracy is not to train children for their vocational futures\, but rather for their role as citizens in a self-governing society\, and it is never too early to start. In this talk\, participants will have the opportunity to explore how their homes and cooperative classrooms can better serve as laboratories for critical thinking\, democratic decision-making\, cooperation\, challenging authority\, working toward agreements\, settling conflicts\, and standing up for beliefs while honoring the beliefs of others. We will examine how children\, through play\, can learn the habits and skills of democratic decision-making and how to get their own needs met while creating the space for others to meet theirs\, all within the context of a community.\n\nRegister to attend. \nFor questions\, please contact kristina.weidert@seattlecolleges.edu. \nThis event is free and open to everyone. For families who are able\, please consider donating to our Co-op COVID Relief Fund/Scholarship Fund so that our co-ops can offer quality programs and support to families during this time of crisis. SUMMARY:Anti-Bias Speaker Series: Conversations with Children: Let’s Talk About Race and Racism
DESCRIPTION:Conscious Parenting: Teaching Young Children Diversity\, Inclusion and Equity\nMPCP is hosting this three part\, anti-bias speaker series in an effort to provide a forum for education and discussion for parents of young children as well as anyone hoping to better understand or advocate for members of their community. \n\nWHEN: February\, March and April (see below for date/time details)\nWHO: This series is open to anyone interested in the topics being covered.\nWHERE: Zoom Video Conferencing\nCOST: FREE\n\nConversations with Children: Let’s Talk About Race and Racism\nApril 3\, 2021 @ 4:30 pm\nJamie Cho\, Ph.D.\nParent educator at two Seattle-based cooperative preschools \nJamie Cho is a parent educator at two cooperative preschools through Seattle Central College and Bellevue College. She holds a Ph.D. in special education from U.C. Berkeley and her research has focused on cultural beliefs around parenting. Jamie has worked previously as an early interventionist with young children with autism spectrum disorders as well as served as an educational researcher at UCLA and teacher educator at California State Universities. She lives in Bellevue WA with her husband and three children\, ages 12\, 10 and 7. \nThis conversation will center race and how to talk with children and answer their questions about racial differences and racism. Children’s understanding of racial categories develop early and are influenced by the narratives offered by the adults in their lives. It is vital that adults are having conversations with children as they try to make sense of what they are observing in their family\, neighborhoods\, schools\, and communities. Through these conversations\, families have the power to raise a generation of critical thinkers who strive for social justice and equity. \nSee Madison Park Co-op’s website for full details.

SUMMARY:Cancelled - Spring Free Lecture with Tom Hobson | Speaking With Children So They Can Think
DESCRIPTION:This event is cancelled due to the local spread of COVID-19\n  \nThe Parent Advisory Council will host a free winter lecture featuring Tom “Teacher Tom\,” a preschool teacher\, writer\, speaker\, artist\, and author\, about Speaking With Children So They Can Think. \nIn a very real sense\, the language we use creates reality. Tom speaks on how the specific words we use\,\nand how and when we use them\, shapes reality for our students for both good and bad. Participants will have\nthe opportunity to learn about the importance of: being clear and precise with language; honoring children\nwithout commanding or bossing them; using words to create a world of facts and intrinsic motivation; creating\nspace in which children must do their own thinking and make their own decisions; and supporting children as\nthey learn from the natural consequences of their behaviors. \nTom is best known\, however\, for his namesake blog “Teacher Tom’s Blog\,” where he has posted daily for nearly a decade\, chronicling the life and times of his little preschool in the rain soaked Pacific Northwest corner of the US. For nearly two decades Teacher Tom was the sole employee of the Woodland Park Cooperative School. Tom travels around the world (Greece\, Iceland\, Australia\, China\, Vietnam\, New Zealand\, Canada\, UK\, and across the US) sharing his views on early childhood education\, play\, and pedagogy. He recently authored his first book\, aptly named “Teacher Tom’s First Book”. His second book will be released in March. \nCome hungry with cash! Yummy savory and sweet goods will be available for purchase with proceeds supporting scholarships for the North Seattle College Cooperative Preschools!

SUMMARY:Special Lecture with Tom "Teacher Tom" Hobson | The Importance of Risky Play
DESCRIPTION:Join the University-Ravenna Cooperative Preschool for a special lecture by Tom “Teacher Tom” Hobson\, renowned preschool educator and author\, on The Importance of Risky Play. \n\n\nChildren need to engage in risky play. Tom discusses how we can walk the fine line required to balance these often competing imperatives. \n\n\n$5 suggested donation supports the North Seattle College Parent Advisory Council (PAC) Scholarship Fund.
